About the Foreclosure Scam Alert Campaign
Loan modification scams are proliferating at a rapid pace. Every day, scam artists prey on unsuspecting homeowners who are facing foreclosure in Orange County. Lured by the promise of loan modification help, these homeowners are losing thousands of dollars and their homes. Many so-called foreclosure rescue companies or foreclosure assistance firms claim they can help a homeowner save their home. Some are brazen enough to offer a money-back guarantee. Fraudulent foreclosure “rescue” professionals use half truths and outright lies to sell services that promise relief. Their goal is to make a quick profit through fees or mortgage payments they collect from homeowners. Unfortunately, most of these foreclosure fraudsters take their money, fail to deliver and leave the homeowner in a far worse situation.
To combat this issue, Neighborhood Housing Services of Orange County (NHS OC), with support from numerous community leaders, has launched an educational campaign in Orange County. The campaign will empower homeowners to protect themselves against loan modification scams, find trusted help from HUD-approved Counseling Agencies and report illegal activity to authorities.
Combating Loan Scams
NHS OC has launched the Foreclosure Scam Alert Task Force. The purpose of the task force is to guide the campaign by recommending strategies that will maximize the initiative’s community outreach while identifying other resources that will augment foreclosure prevention services for distressed homeowners. The task force is comprised of a diverse group of housing industry professionals, enforcement agencies, elected officials, and community leaders from various geographic regions of Orange County. The task force is also a central mechanism for identifying and reporting scammers.
